A little look at the current development for our project in 3D.
We are trying to develop a really fast and efficient workflow to quickly be able to prototype scenes and sequences.

So we started our bachelor film! The last couple of weeks have been going on with story and design! My group is under the fold ( underthefoldfilm.blogspot.com ) And so far i have primarily been working on design.

Not all the stuff that i show here is relevant for the project anymore as we are honing in on the style but i still feel like showing it, as it has become quite the mass so far! :)

Playing around with the new features in Zbrush is so much fun! The new way of working, with the Dynamesh is truly revolutionary, and has really made things fun, easy and fast!

Here are a few sketches, all of them around 30mins, except the fat guy with a cape thing, which prolly took an hour or so.

Trailer Project - A short (Very Short)

So we worked on a trailer project for the last 3 months. This is the final result.

Im very happy with the end result and as i dont really want to say too much ill just give some shout outs:

So here is my Base-Mesh for the project, still missing a little few things, but all in all this is the final mesh.
Also there is a little ZBrush render, just played a bit with the mesh, nothing fancy, and since we will be
working in Mudbox the next week there is no need to double project this one.

Having a mush with good topology is SUPER sweet when going into detailing and sculpting, so from now on i will prolly retopo / Model all things i want to take far! hehe.

So this is a speed sculpt from ZBRUSH, worked a little in PS so add color and finesse :) made for a small in class competition. It ended up pretty good as a sculpt, even tho it does not really look like Adam. At least not enough im afraid! :)

I recently watched a video with Brad Rigney, who is an amazing artist, and i wanted to put some of his thoughts and ideas to work of my own. So while making our clay Marquette for the character project i did some playing around in the digital realm aswell. The lower body is completly usable with good topology while the upper part is still Zbrush only. Ofcourse it is only a sketch, the head is quite a bit off, hair is missing, and the creatures tounge too, and alot of overall sculpting, but this is just to check out some stuff.

Zbrush sketching!

Heya!

So i have not been updating that often recently, and that bothers me! hehe

so heres is a quick head done in Zbrush and with some MR renders to go with it. The head was done quickly in about 25mins or so, then i retopoed the thing to get nice details in the eyes, nose and mouth area, fixed verts and some edges in maya and then went back and finalized the sculpt, adding texture, displacement and bump to the low-res model. The maps don not quite behave in MR, so still playing to get the detail from Zbrush.

7 Weeks of project, 2 days to deadline and I am done. It doesn't seem right, and then again, it does.
This whole project have been a tremendous journey and i have been taking huge steps towards becoming better. This image, is one of the most complete and rewarding things i have ever completed, and is so perhaps more so because of the process it was to create it. I must say this is hands down the best I have ever performed in anything, and even though that doesn't say a lot considering that I am, by no means a great artist, i really feel like i have created something worthwhile, at least for myself.

Now, for the shout outs and respects! Mad respect to all the teachers who helped me realize this project, Chris Turnham and Kevin Dart for being a tremendous help and inspiration during the conceptual phase, they really pushed me further! Anna Kubik, for helping realizing the whole transition from 2D to 3D, the one thing that scared me the most, but she made it possible, and last but not least, André Bergs, who really learned me a lot of skills, and expanding my toolset, and ofcourse, thanks for the company during the project, you guys are Grrreat! Lastly i would like to thank my classmates, for setting a high bar for quality and enthusiasm!

Sitting in the final stages of comping.And i cant decide between using DOF or not... I like the effect and i think it adds to the picture, but alot of the detail and work i put into the out of focus area get lost. I know the effect is rather severe in this example, but the feeling of loosing detail is pretty much there if i use it even at small portions, so if im gonna do it, im gonna go all out! :)

Freak Update

I have not posted in a while, but i am working non stop on my project, at home and in school, but heres a update, on how its going so far. Everything is comming along nicely, mostly working on textures and shaders.

This is just a image that i rendered today, from home, so some models are missing textures right now, but it was a test to try and play with DOF within photoshop using a depth map and also testing my new normal map for the main character, hope you like how this is turning out, i for one do :)

Saurus!

So in the midst of our project I decided to take my mind off the Circus Freak, at least for the weekend, so i did a quick Sculpt in Zbrush and rendered it in Maya. Recently i also found out about 3D printing for the masses, and got quite interested in trying to realize a sculpt fully. I might take this saurus, and add the missing parts of armory and weaponry and really finish it up and send it off for printing, i have never tried it, but i can imagine the satisfaction achieved by having a physical model between your hands.

Anyways, hope you all enjoy your weekend! i sure do and i had a great time last night!

Zbrush testing

Heres a little test to see if creating normal + displacement maps in Zbrush might be the way to go for my character. As of right now i feel really tempted, but over detailing like this in the mesh, really takes away from that original concept. Hmm.. well see, for now i have to create some good UV's, so whatever i choose to do will work out great throughout posing, rendering and showcasing.

Update On Circus Freak

FINALLY! the base mesh for my circus freak is officially done!
the model is 7438 Faces in total with jacket and eyes, no triangless or n-gons!
ready for unwrapping, then the fun begins and I can start create my Diffuse,
Specc, Normal and Displacement maps :)

Hello Guys. While I know I told you this blog is school related only, I wanted to take a moment and show you some photographs I took during the summer. I'm getting a new lens any day know, and I really felt like I had to work some photos! These where all taking while in a car out the window, the whole idea was like, how fast can you spot something, compose it, and get OK results. Well, even though a lot of these images a selects out of bursts of maybe 4-5 frames I still think its kinda valid and shows that interesting things can happen if you start shooting and composing at the same time. And also since we just had a week on composition I thought it would be funny to pick some pictures that I always thought where kinda cool, but I didn't know why, obviously there's some things in here that could be better, and so I'm looking forward to start shooting with new knowledge of composition! - Rune Rask

Ok, So heres a very small update. I played a lot with Normal Maps /Displacement Maps - the two 3d images are both 1200 polys with normal / Displacement maps, and suddenly they look like a million polys. Nice! :D The top image, is a sketch im working on atm. Tomorrow i will hopefully be uploading some video with some 3d animation, tho its more a "rig" test than actuall animation, you see i cant animate... so the videos will only be for showcase purposes, Rendering, rigging, edit and so on. So if you think the animation is shitty, thats because it is! hehe. Take care - Rune Rask

Ok, so this might not be that interesting! But i played quite a bit with the Physical_Sun shader node in maya to test it out, and while im still a complete newbie with this node, i think you can get quite nice results in a short time. The model is a decimated Zbrush tool, (3mill polys to 200k) and rendered with Mental ray. - Rune Rask

So here is an armature model i made. I still have both the basic szphere rig and the zketch model, for fixing/adjusting later on. But this is the progress so far and with a Polymesh test to see how adaptive the topology was, and it turned out to be great, the model in the picture is just below 1mil which is really impressive for such a detailed model. For people at TAW: I think i will make the Ztools readily available on the common drives in case anybody wants to mess around with this on there own. Also, i encorage people with better anatomy skills than myself to maybe make other "standards" that people can sculpt from. Anyways, happy Zbrushing everyone! :) - Rune Rask

Another try with the new tools in Zbrush 3.5. I really like how you can "paint" on new geometry using the new Zsketch feature, creating assets for your character have never been easier! Also, the entire workflow is so much more nice, the standard zsphere system is also improved tons and actually usable, im guessing for creating more standardized meshes, it will be really great. tons of new brushes that just work like a charm! - Rune Rask

So at the end of last week, we got a chance to play a bit with making clay models, in the material called Chavant, it was tons of fun and very rewarding, I will most certainly work with this again as it is a joy! It was the end of our concept week with Julia, I learned a lot and the whole week was just plain fun. This week is intro to maya with Carla, it is a bit "too" basic, but I am quite the nooblet in Maya so I hope we will advance fast.
